How To: Add Subtitles to your PS3 Movies
I was suprised that my PS3 didn’t have .srt file support for .avi/.m2ts/.wmv files directly out of the box. In the past, with my previous media centers, I have always had similar issues where I had to “hardcode” subs over the film, a process that took 25-30 minutes. I was initially devastated that this would be the same situation once again until I came across a program called AVIAddSubX. What AVIAddSubX does is converts your .avi file to a .divx file, a format that works by default with the PS3. It adds an actual subtitle track to the .avi file in less than 2 minutes. Here is a short step-by-step walkthrough regarding how to do this yourself.
- Download a program called AVIAddXSubs v9.3 from AfterDawn.
- Extract the AVIAddXSub folder to wherever you choose and run AVIAddXSubs.exe.
- Click the second tab in the AVIAddXSubs v9.3 window titled “Configuration 1″.
- Change the “Language Code” option to whatever language the subtitles you are adding are.
- Select whatever font you prefer (I stuck with default Verdana)
- Select an appropriate font size and color for your TV (I used 18 font size and a light yellow for the color).
- Select NTSC under “Subtitle Bitmap”.
- When you are done with the “Configuration 1″ tab it should look similar to this. You’ll only have to do steps 2 and 4-8 once
. - Next you’ll want to go back to the “Create XSUB or Idx/Sub” tab.
- This next step is very important, you need to make sure that your subtitle file and .avi file have the same name (except for extensions) and are located in the same folder. Just like this:

- In the “Create XSUB or Idx/Sub” tab click the “…” button next to the blank space for the “File Name(s) (.avi or .srt or .idx). Or Folder(s)” section.
- Select your .avi file you wish to add subtitles to.
- Select your output folder.
- Click start, wait anywhere from 30sec->120seconds depending on the length and size of the file, the text window will display a confirmation when the subtitles are done being added.
- Load the file through your PS3 media center and hit triangle when it begins to play, scroll over to subtitle options and activate the new subtitles you just added!
If you have any problems finding subtitles for your video files check out sites like SubScene or SubtitleSeeker.

I’m also using Aviaddxsubs with my PS3, but have a hard time syncing the movie audio and subtitles. Any suggestions?
Make sure the subtitles you have match the file name, there are different versions of subtitles you can find at subscene.com

I use Vuze as my media center, but after doing all steps mentioned above, my ps3 can’t find the subs. I’ve checked step by step trying to find out what’s wrong but I can’t find it. Could it be that azureus Vuze doesn’t support the subs?
My PS3 doesnt detect .divx extensions for videos and even when I select .avi in AviAddSubs as an output video I still can’t access the subtitles option in PS3. When I Click “….” button to convert the video I only see the video icon and not the subtitles file(.srt), I’m confused as to how to get subtitles.
@MG: Make sure you have divx videos enabled in the options portion of your PS3.

Thanks for the followup, appreciate it. On system settings, I have enable WMA playback, Enable ATRAC but I only have The VOD Registration Code for DivX. I downloaded the registration code but I can’t seem to run the registration video on the PS3 since its a .divx file. Any suggestion on how to run the registration video in any other format? My ps3 is catching only .avi files. THANKS
I tried to run it through a USB flash drive and through the media center but it won’t detect it since its a .divx
Ok, you’ll be glad to know I ran the video by going to the USB>option>display All> and it did detect it, even though it played the video, My PS3 isn’t detecting anyother .divx files through the media center, Guess I’ll just have to load them in my USB and see if that works
How do i add subs to .mp4 or .m2ts files..????
Hi there,
I have an AVI file and an .idx AND .sub file for a movie, all with identical labels, and the hardcoding still doesn’t work.
Does this only work for .srt files??
The heading for this tutorial can be misunderstood, since it only deals with DivX. You should change, since many other formats can be played by the PS3, while some of them will support subtitles too.
THE PROGRAM WORKS FINE!!!!!!!
Is there a way to do this for mp4s? Thanks
you can rename .divx to .avi and it should be fine.
Thank you very much, i realy appriciate is working perfect on PS3
this software only for avi right ? mp4 have error.
Is their any similar way to add subtitles to .mp4 videos for PS3……Pls reply……..
You can either fallow the path MG wrote above or you can simply create a folder named VIDEO in your Fat32 USB device and put the divx file inside it. PS3 will automaticly recognize the file when you clicked the USB device icon under XMB’s “Video” section. PS3 can play divx files, I personally play them in my PS3 and I didn’t even registrated that VOD thing.
Cool
Thanks for the information!

This is correct; the AVIAddSubsX software only works with .avi format files.
